What does a typical beatnik look like?
By the end of the 1950's the term Beatnik (a play off the Russian satellite Sputnik) began to lose ties to the literary movement and started referring to any young person living as a bohemian or acting rebelliously. However this social movement still developed a stereotypical manner of dress that became synonymous with the Beat Movement. The cliche beatnik wears a lose fitting t-shirt or turtle neck sweater over black pants. Accessories like beret hats and sun glasses are also common. Males are usually known to grow out their facial hair typically in the form of a goatee and harbor long, unkempt hair. Women typically wear very heavy eye makeup. A poetry notebook and bongo drums are also popular additions to any beatnik outfit.
