Beatniks Vs. Hippies
As the 1960s progressed the Beatniks and the Hippies, two separate subculture, morphed into one distinguishable counterculture movement which shifted to it's attention from social to political issues. This came primarily in the form of anti-war protests which many of the original Beatnik authors participated in. Jack Kerouac infamously denounced the radical new movement as an excuse to be spiteful. Though the hippies and beatniks share many of the same beliefs they are a fundamentally different group. Whereas Beatniks tend to keep a low profile in expressing themselves with dark, simple clothing the hippies reveled in maintaining individuality with each different, colorful costume. Besides clothing most Beats were much more apolitical than the hippies. The Beatniks believed that even acknowledging the government and it's corruption further rooted it's power. The hippies on the other hand were active participants in the Civil Rights Movement as well as the anti-war protests.
